What is Health Informatics?

When you search the internet for health informatics the first few pages of results are mostly college programs.  These do a good job explaining their programs and what you might do after graduation with healthcare data.  However, they explore what it’s like to work in the field and the variety of data and questions you will cover.  I’ve been doing reporting and data analytic projects for over 20 years.  I’ve worked specifically in healthcare analytics for over 10 years and often get asked what is the difference between working in healthcare and other industries.  The answer is the data and regulations around the data.

Health informatics is what business intelligence is to non-healthcare companies.  Depending upon what type of business your healthcare company is such as provider, payer, hospital, etc.  How you use data and your goals can vary based upon your business objectives.  Data is the core of healthcare analytics and must be stored in a manner that makes it easy to organize, catalog and retrieve.

Common Data Sources for health informatics for health care data:

Sample Healthcare Claims Data Example

Regardless of the claims system you are using.  You can get deep insights on your data quickly using Power BI.  In this example, you will see a few columns from a sample Excel output of typical claims data.  The process to using Power BI for healthcare data is to select your data source.  This could be a database connection, Excel or csv file or one of the other 60+ data sources Power BI can access.  In the examples that follow, I imported a 403 MB Excel file with my claim data and created reports that return results quickly without having to recalculate a spreadsheet or email to others.

Power BI Healthcare Payer Claim Summary Example

After importing the data into Power BI, many different types of reports can be created based on your needs.  In this example, I created a summary overview that lets me see claim count, claim amount and member count by year.  In addition, I can see the number of claims by ICD code along with the Average of Paid Amount by ICD.  As you can see, this single image gives you many different views of the data.

Filtering Healthcare Data in Power BI by Date

To gain more insights into the same data without any additional programming.  I used the built in drill down functionality to drill into the quarter on two of the charts.  I could continue to drill down to month and even day if I wanted.  Then I selected 2020, Qtr 1 data by clicking it with my mouse and this filters the entire page.

All of the data is now reflecting the information for 2010, Qtr 1.

Filtering Power BI Healthcare Data by Table Value

In this image, I have changed how I am filtering from 2010, Qtr 1 to selecting a value from the table on the right.  By clicking on Lymphatic diag proc NEC.  All of the visuals on the page are now filtered to show the ratio of this ICD code to the total.  You can see the trends of these claims by year, quarter.  In addition, you can still drill down to month or day if required to get more detailed insights.

Healthcare Analytics Trend Analysis with Power BI

In the same report, I built another page that focuses on trends related to claim count and average paid amounts.  The chart on the top right, shows the average of paid claims over 3 years.  The red dotted line is the average trend.  As you explore the data the average trend line automatically recalculates.  The bottom right graph plots the claim count as bars to the average of paid claims as the line.  You can quickly see the average claim cost has gone up quarter by quarter.  The table on the left shows summary information by ICD long description.  Each column can be sorted just by clicking the column name.

Filtering Heathcare Data Trends in Power BI

In this image, I have filtered the report by clicking on the Biopsy of lymphatic structure to focus on the claims and average of cost all claims associated to this code.  Self service reporting such as this.  Enables your entire team to quickly look into your data and get better insights.  No need to ask for additional data pulls or more ad-hoc requests.  As you can see from these reports.  Taking data from your claim system and publishing it to Power BI creates a powerful new way for your team to perform analytics and improve your operations.
