Build Power BI Snowflake Based Reports

In this post I will walk you through the steps required to use the Power BI Snowflake Connector to access data in a Snowflake warehouse.  If you are new either Power BI or Snowflake this will be a quick reference for you to make the connection and where to find the server name.

Step 1 – Open Power BI and then select Get Data to see the available data connectors.  Type “snowflake” in the search box to bring up the Snowflake connector as shown below.

Now you need to input the connection string and warehouse that you would like to connect to.  To determine your Snowflake instance, login to your Snowflake account and then navigate to your Warehouses.  In the screenshot below you can see the URL, copy the string to be used as the server name in the connector ending at snowflakecomputing.com.  My Snowflake instance is setup on Microsoft Azure so my server string looks like this:

For example server name –  zz123456.west-us-2.azure.snowflakecomputing.com

Warehouse name – COMPUTE_WH

Then hit Connect to proceed to the login screen.

Enter your Snowflake user and password.  When successful you will then see the databases and tables available for use in Power BI.

Now that you are connected and authenticated, you will be able to select the data you want to visualize in Power BI.  Just like the other data connectors, a list of available database and tables are shown.  Select the objects that you need and then click Load.

Once connected, you can use the data just like any other data source such as add relationships, create new columns, measures.  Then start building your reports and data visualization in Power BI Desktop.

This completes the steps you need to use to access data with the Power BI Snowflake Connector.
